It's impossible not to mention this feature of the same Mt Arthur walk. Not so much as a planting recommendation – it's too slow and tricky to grow. Just for the magic of its bizarre candelabra stands of pineapple heads. Add peeling bark flashing with orange, a thick self-mulching carpet of leaves and lichen-covered southern beeches tortured like bonsai, and a master Japanese gardener/animator could have been at work.
