skirt or no skirt?

I'm coming around to palms that keep their dead fronds as a skirt around the trunk – though it still irritates my sense of tidiness. The overlapping thatch has its appeal.

A soft spot for the line of a clean palm trunk remains. But my preference is for the criss-cross patterns made by residual leaf bases.

Not sure why it's come about but these Washingtonias show all three versions of skirt, clear trunk and butts.
