new waratah

My waratah has been in 7 months and has 6 buds but is looking sad. should I cut the buds off and feed it.

6 buds in 7 months sounds like a good return – especially for something that's looking sad.
Waratahs are tricky: transplant shy, need perfect drainage. Assuming it's in a favourable location (not tropical, not frosty, plenty of sun and drainage), I'd leave the buds for now and see how they – and the plant – do come spring. And it's a bit late in the season for fertilising to be useful. Leave that till spring too. As they're sensitive to phosphorous, only use a specialist native fertiliser.
