We inherited my grandparents' old market garden & did our bit to turn semi-rural St Ives into a suburb. The front yard was roses, dahlias & a vast lawn. Avocado, broccoli & prickly pear grew out the back. Relic plum and fig trees were given their own tennis court sized bird-proof fence. Exploring bush around this leafy area maintained the exposure to plants. But it was the gift when I was ten from my aunt of a cyclamen – so white, swan-like & alien that made me want to grow things.
